My Tsunami-Aceh Mission Trip
This mission trip was a challenging but a great experience for me. It has greatly impacted my life in many ways.

Throughout the trip, I saw what it’s really like to be in desperate need and to have nothing left for survival. Most parts of Banda Aceh was left in ruins. Many of the Acehnese lost their source of income after the Tsunami disaster struck their town. They have no food, no shelter and they lost their loved ones in the midst of it all. Worst still a lot of the survivors suffer from some kind of disease that might be fatal to them if left untreated.

A lot of the survivors lost their doctors and source of medication after the Tsunami. They are in a dire state. They can’t find the medication anywhere in town, and they don’t have the money to travel to the nearest town to get help. Some of the diseases were very rare and the doctors did not have the right medication to treat them. A lot of the Acehnese suffered from mental and psychological trauma as well. Some of them had to go through counseling.

While I was there, I helped out at a medical base set up by a local church, Gereja Bathel Indonesia and City Harvest Church Singapore. I was placed to help out as a translator for an American doctor and for the locals. It was a great learning experience for me as I saw how important a doctor was during emergency situations. I helped the doctor translate from English to Malay. I could see the relief and comfort in the eyes of the patients through my translation. I assured them that the doctor would do his best to help them. I helped out at the medical base everyday while I was there.

Each day, the medical base was filled with patients. I gave my best to help out as much as possible. My heart was deeply moved when I saw the conditions of the people in Banda Aceh. I saw how God really used this catastrophy to open a way to let the love of God touch the people of Aceh. The Acehnese was very grateful and deeply touched by our actions even they knew that we are Christians. I'll try to post up some photos.
